Rafael Salaberry, PhD
Dr. Salaberry is Associate Chair and Director of the language program at the Univeristy of Texas, Austin, where he oversees the design of curricula and implementation of all language courses comprising first to third year Spanish and Portuguese, serving approximately 7,000 students per year. As a professor of Spanish linguistics and second language acquisition, Dr. Salaberry has been published in numerous journals, including three books published by John Benjamins, and has authored an upcoming book to be published by Continuum Press. His teaching on social and political implications of bilingual education in the US will be covered by works published by Multilingual Matters (2009). Currently, Rafael serves on the Editorial Board of the peer-reviewed journal Language@Internet.
A native of Uruguay, Dr. Salaberry earned his PhD in Romance Linguistics with a minor in Cognitive Studies from Cornell University in 1997. He has held various faculty appointments at University of Minnesota, Pennsylvania State University and Rice University.
Bill Morrow
Bill currently serves as Chairman and CEO of CSIdentity and Fusion Mobile. Previously, Bill was founder and CEO of Grande Communications. As the presiding officer of the State of Texas’ Emerging Technology Advisory Committee, Morrow leads a team of 17 members that recommend eligible proposals for funding under the state's $200 million Emerging Technology Fund.
He continues his responsibilities as a member of Grande's executive board. Morrow was co-founder and director of ClearSource Communications and CEO of Knology Communications. Bill currently serves as Vice Chair of the Communications Committee at the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce and as a board member of the Austin Economic Development Corporation.
Jose Lozano
Jose currently serves as Vice-Chairman and Executive VP of ImpreMedia, LLC. As the largest Hispanic news and information company in the United States, ImpreMedia reaches 17 markets representing 66% of the U.S. Hispanic population. Jose served as CEO and Publisher of La Opinión from 1986 until 2004, was instrumental in founding ImpreMedia, and now serves on several boards including the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communications.
John Canny, PhD
Dr. Canny currently head up the “Graphics and Human Computer Interface” research group at the University of California, Berkeley. During his tenure at UC Berkeley, John has authored several publications on context-aware systems, perceptual interfaces (computer vision and speech), visualization and learning technologies. Dr. Canny was recently awarded a prestigious McArthur Foundation grant for his work on the MILLEE (Mobile and Immersive Learning for Literacy in Emerging Economies), which provides English-language learning services via mobile phone to underprivileged children in rural India.
Enrique Ortiz
Enrique is a noted mobile technologist, author, and wireless blogger. Enrique is founder and CTO of eZee, Inc., a mobility company that specializes in advanced context-based marketing, where he oversees the company's technology and products groups. Enrique is founder and principal at Artemis Wireless Werks, a mobile strategy and services consulting company which has helped dozens of companies, including edioma, deliver their mobile products. Enrique, a vocal mobile evangelist, helped define the Java standards for mobile handsets, and is a founding member of the Austin Wireless Alliance, the Austin chapter of Mobile Monday, Carnival of the Mobilists, and the Austin Bootstrap Network’s Mobile Subgroup.
Enrique has over 18 years of engineering and management experience on behalf of IBM, Pervasive Software, AGEA, and Aligo. His expertise lies in avionics software (Space Shuttle OS), embedded, robotics and image processing, multimedia streaming, large financial systems, and end-to-end mobility systems. Enrique holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Puerto Rico.
Darrell Petty
Darrell is a seasoned executive that has played a leadership role in helping organizations ranging from startups to Fortune 50 companies improve their performance by addressing operations improvement, post merger integration and information technology needs. He recently spent 17 years with Accenture where he held various leadership positions and was responsible for managing a $100+m consulting and outsourcing practice.
Levi Shapiro
Mr. Shapiro is a wireless analyst and journalist, specializing in mobile media marketing and consumption. During a 15 -year career in media and technology, he has helped launch new business units (IBM), innovative services (Toyota) and launch entirely new companies (Two Minute Television, Snack Mobile, Double Agent, Edioma, ARA). As Senior Director of Audience Metrics at Telephia, Mr. Shapiro developed products and partnerships with Hollywood movie studios, broadcast and cable TV networks, game and internet publishers, record labels, wireless carriers, brands and advertising agencies. Previously, Mr. Shapiro founded two start-ups, Two Minute Television and Snack Mobile. Two Minute Television created short-form, ad-supported, episodic TV series with each episode averaging 4 million viewers. In addition to original content, this included a library of licensed programming that appeared on broadcast, cable, internet, mobile, p2p, IPTV and other digital platforms. Snack Mobile developed proprietary software for video content owners to transfer their content to mobile. Currently, Mr. Shapiro serves on the Advisory Board of three digital media companies and a non-profit Research Center affiliated with USC. Mr. Shapiro serves on the Executive Committee of two education-focused charities, is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and a monthly Contributor to industry publications RCR Wireless News, Video Age and Fierce Wireless. He holds degrees from Tulane (BA), Cornell (Asian Studies) and MIT (MBA).
